Love is in the air for Salma Hayek, Disney

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-08-11 18:19

LOS ANGELES - Salma Hayek will star in and produce an untitled romantic
comedy for Walt Disney Pictures.

The story follows a conservative doctor who gets the surprise of his life
when he learns that the ex-boyfriend of his fiancee (Hayek) is an
international Latin superstar who has come to Los Angeles to win her back.

The script was written by Ed Decter and John Strauss, whose credits
include Disney's last two "Santa Clause" movies.

Hayek is doing voice work on Disney's "South of the Border." She also is
an executive producer of Disney-owned ABC's "Ugly Betty," which is up for
11 Emmys, including one for Hayek for guest actress in a comedy series.

Chinese Mandarin - Writer-director Mel Shavelson dies at 90

Writer-director Mel Shavelson dies at 90

(AP)
Updated: 2007-08-09 20:44

LOS ANGELES - Melville "Mel" Shavelson, who wrote, directed and produced
dozens of films with such stars as Lucille Ball, Jimmy Cagney and Frank
Sinatra and was twice nominated for Academy Awards, died Wednesday at age
90.

Shavelson died at his Studio City home of natural causes, family
spokesman Warren Cowan told The Associated Press.

Shavelson worked as a gag writer for Bob Hope's radio show in the 1930s
before going on to write or co-write more than 35 movies and direct a
dozen.

He was nominated for best screenplay Oscars for "The Seven Little Foys,"
the 1956 film that starred Hope as legendary vaudevillian Eddie Foy, and
for the 1958 romantic comedy "Houseboat." He also directed both films.

But making movies wasn't always the glamorous business many people
imagine, Shavelson related in an essay he recently completed
commemorating what would have been Ball's 96th birthday on Monday.

The two had a contentious relationship on the set of the 1968 movie,
"Yours, Mine and Ours" about a couple raising 18 children, and Shavelson
said that after the final scene was shot the actress asked how he liked
directing her.

He said he replied, "Lucy, this is the first time I ever made a film with
19 children."

"To my surprise, she started to cry," Shavelson said. She wouldn't talk
to him for months.

The making of 1958's "Houseboat" was also complicated, Shavelson said,
because Cary Grant, who was married to someone else, fell in love with
his co-star, Sophia Loren, who was in love with producer Carlo Ponti, who
was splitting with his wife.

On the day she was filming a marriage scene with Grant she married Ponti
by proxy in Mexico.

"And that's how you make a successful family comedy in Hollywood,"
Shavelson told columnist Patrick Goldstein of the Los Angeles Times.

The writer-director also had his share of run-ins with Kirk Douglas while
directing him in the 1966 drama "Cast a Giant Shadow."

After the movie was released, Douglas sent him a letter that read: "Mel,
I think it was a good picture. It could have been better if I had paid
more attention to you."

Shavelson both wrote and directed "Cast a Giant Shadow," as well as "The
Five Pennies," "It Started in Naples," "On the Double," "A New Kind of
Love," and "The War Between Men and Women."

He served three terms as president of the Writers Guild of America, West,
and was on the writing-program faculty at the University of Southern
California.

He also wrote two novels and four nonfiction books.

His autobiography, "How to Succeed in Hollywood Without Really Trying,
P.S. 鈥 You Can't!" was published on April 1, his 90th birthday.

Shavelson is survived by his wife, Ruth; a son, Richard Shavelson; a
daughter, Lynne Joiner; and three grandchildren.

Pay to hear the sounds of silence

Updated: 2007-08-08 16:45

A German designer wants to sell a few minutes of silence to residents and
travelers in Shanghai.

Andreas Rimkus has designed a series of silence stations - noise-proof
booths that can hold up to 15 people at a time - that he would like to
set up in busy areas around the city, such as Nanjing Road Pedestrian
Mall.

People would pay a few yuan to enter and spend several minutes relaxing
in silence, according to Rimkus, who compares them to public bathrooms.

He is in talks with the city's government to show off the idea, which he
calls Shanghai Art Stations of Silence. Rimkus said he designed the
silence station for the city because he believes Shanghai is a city that
can make the impossible into possible.

The stations are designed like large public sculptures and come in
various shapes, according to Rimkus.

"If the stations appear in the city, they will become the world's first
stores to allow people to consume silence," Rimkus told the Oriental
Morning Post.

He said the inside of the stations looks like a typical office, with
space separated by cubicles.

Love casts a spell over Emma Watson

(ANI)
Updated: 2007-08-07 11:46

?

?Emma Watson

?

The lovebug seems to have bitten Harry Potter star Emma Watson.

The young actress, who plays Hermione in the movie series, not so long
ago moaned that her fame was having a negative effect on her love life,
has reportedly fallen under the spell of Tom Ducker, a 17-year old rugby
player.

And so enamoured are the two with each other that they even enjoyed a
romantic getaway on the French Riviera recently.

Watson, 17, and Ducker were spotted hanging out in nightclubs and eating
lobster with champagne while they stayed at Chateau de la Chevre d'Or in
Eze, near Nice.

Staff at the swanky Chateau, where suites with ocean views cost 385
pounds a night, said that the two teens were 'delightful guests'.

"They arrived quietly at about 7.30pm and drank champagne and ate
lobsters all night. They were clearly loving each other's company and
said they were in a very romantic place, with the Mediterranean just in
front of them and great music," the Daily Mail quoted owner Ali
Abdelhafidh, as saying. "They said they were having a wonderful holiday
and did not leave until well after 2am. It was great to see a young
couple so much in love but Emma had time for everyone else, too.

"A lot of celebrities come here, including Elton John and Bono, but
having Emma here was something special. She's a real star in every sense
of the word."

A fellow diner said: "They were knocking back the champagne and didn't
stop laughing and joking. Emma was acting like a beautifully mannered
young woman. Castel Plage is very sophisticated and the two of them
looked in their element."

However, Ducker's father John insisted that there was nothing romantic
between them, and that they were simply friends.

"They are just friends - don't read anything more into it than that. My
wife and I have met Emma once or twice. She is a lovely young lady," he
said.

Timberlake goes ring shopping for Biel

(WENN)
Updated: 2007-08-06 10:31

Justin Timberlake has fuelled rumours he's getting serious with new
girlfriend Jessica Biel by shopping for rings.

Biel recently quashed reports she'd be walking down the aisle with the
pop star anytime soon explaining, "What's weird is: You're single for 20
or 30 years, and you're married for like 70. It doesn't seem like a good
ratio, does it?"

But her firm words haven't deterred Timberlake, who reportedly snapped up
a promise ring in Santa Monica, California, recently to make their
relationship more official.

A source tells Life + Style magazine, "Justin isn't ready to propose, but
he wants to make a commitment to her.

"Justin says Jess is his dream girl. He wants to give her a symbol of his
affection and love."

The couple has been dating since May.

Chinese School - Disney reports higher income

Disney reports higher income

(AP)
Updated: 2007-08-03 15:46

LOS ANGELES?- Continued strong attendance at its domestic theme parks and
brisk sales of video games and licensed merchandise helped boost profits
for The Walt Disney Co. in the third quarter.

The Burbank-based media conglomerate also took a big step to bolster its
Internet offerings for teens with the purchase of Club Penguin, an online
entertainment site, the company said Wednesday.

Disney has stayed out of the hunt for such popular social networking
sites as YouTube and MySpace, preferring to develop its own Disney.com
site and virtual worlds featuring its wide variety of characters,
including Tinkerbell and Capt. Jack Sparrow.

The purchase of Club Penguin for $350 million in cash, with the
possibility of another $350 million if certain profit targets are met,
will help speed those efforts, the company said.

The site, launched only two years ago by Canada's New Horizon Interactive
Ltd., will begin delivering profit for Disney right away.

"Club Penguin has grown into a site that boasts more than 12 million
activated users and 700,000 paying subscribers," Disney Chief Executive
Robert Iger said in a conference call with analysts Wednesday. "Imagine
how Disney's marketing skills and worldwide technological capabilities
can contribute to Club Penguin's growth and you can see why we are so
enthusiastic about this acquisition."

The announcement came the same day Disney reported strong third-quarter
earnings.

The company reported net income for the three months ended June 30 of
$1.18 billion, or 57 cents per share, compared with $1.13 billion, or 53
cents per share, in the same period last year.

Revenue climbed to $9.05 billion from $8.47 billion in the year-ago
period.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call had expected profit of 55 cents
per share on revenue of about $9.02 billion.

The company saw double-digit growth in its theme parks, media networks
and consumer products division in the quarter.

Despite the success of "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End,"
profits fell at Disney's film studio due to lower revenue from DVD sales.

Operating income at Disney's media networks division jumped 23 percent
during the third quarter to $1.36 billion on the strength of subscription
fees paid by cable companies for its ESPN channel and ad revenue at ABC,
the company said.

The company's consumer products division delivered a 12 percent increase
in operating income and a 23 percent rise in revenue from strong video
game sales and continued growth in licensing revenue from items based on
the animated film "Cars."

Operating profit at its parks and resorts division rose 13 percent on
increased attendance and spending at Disneyland and Walt Disney World
resorts.

Attendance at Walt Disney World in Florida increased 4 percent in the
quarter and per-guest spending also rose, said Tom Staggs, Disney's chief
financial officer.

Attendance at the Disneyland resort in California was flat for the
quarter, but guest spending increased slightly, he said.

Disney's film studio saw operating income drop 20 percent in the quarter,
despite a 4 percent rise in revenue.

Ticket sales from the latest "Pirates of the Caribbean" film were offset
by marketing costs for its latest Pixar Animation Studios release,
"Ratatouille," the company said. Disney also did not have any strong DVD
release in the quarter, while last year's quarter included revenue from
the sale of 18 million DVDs of "Chronicles of Narnia."

The company repurchased 55 million shares for $1.9 billion during the
quarter.

For the first nine months of the year, Disney reported net income of
$3.81 billion, or $1.81 per share, compared with $2.59 billion, or $1.28
per share, in the same period last year.

Revenue for the first nine months grew to $26.58 billion from $25.10
billion in last year's period.

The company released the financial results after markets closed
Wednesday. Disney shares rose 53 cents, or 1.6 percent, to $34.36
Thursday.

When it comes to pushy waiters one serve is more than enough

By Xie Fang
Updated: 2007-08-02 14:34

You might not lose your way in a city if you have a map in hand. But you
might get lost in a crowd of waiters sent from different restaurants to
tout for business.

This is something I cannot understand. Chinese are usually slightly shy
and conservative. But the waiters appear too warm and even aggressive
when soliciting diners.

Instead of standing next to the door to greet guests, the waiters usually
step out and cry out. If a diner appears to have a look of puzzlement
about where to eat, it will just be the beginning of a "war".

Once my friends took me out for lunch in Maojiapu, a hot spot at the foot
of the Dragon Well Mountain in Hangzhou of East China's Zhejiang
Province. Tea houses line up on the roadsides, serving not only tea but
also delicious food.

As we slowed down the car, trying to find a place to park, a flock of
middle-aged waitresses spotted us.

They were so excited and started to chase our car, some even clapped the
windows to call for our attention, which made me feel as if I were a film
star, and I was quite flattered.

"They are not thrilled by you, they are thrilled by the money in your
pocket," my friend warned.

We got out of the car, but soon stepped into a crowd of non-stop talking
women. I felt sorry for myself as I could close my eyes but I could not
close my ears.

Each of them strongly recommended their own tea house, and tried to drag
us into different directions.

To end the embarrassment, we quickly decided to follow the one who looked
the kindest and most sincere among these superwomen.

Later, when we found the food was not as pleasant as the woman
guaranteed, and looked for her to complain, unfortunately, she was busy
chasing other new arrivals.

In Beijing, the job of greeting diners has apparently been taken over by
men, especially on Guijie, a famous dining street in Dongcheng District.
There are always young waiters in different uniforms standing anxiously
on the roadside, like a herd of fish hungry for food.

I was told that in the past, some waiters even carried young female
customers into their restaurants, in order to compete with others.

I don't think it will happen to me as I am too big for the waiter's
shoulders, but I never dare to challenge it.

So, every time I visit there, I just go straight to the restaurant I have
booked.

Once I finished dinner with my friends and thinking naively that no one
could bother us any more, we took a walk on the street.

However, we were still followed by persistent waiters.

"I have eaten already," I cried out impatiently.

"Our food is so good that people can hardly resist it," a tall man said,
smiling.

Then he lowered his voice, saying: "How about a second dinner? I promise
I will never tell your weight-conscious friends!"

(IANS)
Updated: 2007-07-31 19:42

Hollywood siren Jessica Alba says she will never appear nude in front of
cameras.

The 26-year-old 'Into The Blue' actress, who caught everyone's eye with
her role as a stripper in the hit film 'Sin City', has vowed not to do
steamy scenes for films, world entertainment news network reported.

She says: 'I'm attracted to roles that are more innocent. I haven't done
a sex scene and I've never done nudity.'

Paris Hilton?to star in musical thriller

(ANI)
Updated: 2007-07-30 16:58

Former jailbird Paris Hilton will join the cast of 'Repo! The Genetic
Opera', a musical thriller.

Actress Paris Hilton arrives at the exclusive Chelsea Football Club Paint
the Town Blue party at a private residence in Los Angeles on Wednesday,
July 18, 2007. [AP]

The heiress will co-star with Alexa Vega and Paul Sorvino in the flick,
which is set in 2056, when plague epidemic is on the run to wipe out the
entire humankind.

The only ones, who can afford a costly organ transplant, can hope to
survive.

Hilton will play the daughter of an organ transplant magnate (Sorvino).

Director Darren Lynn Bousman of "Saw" films fame said that the actress is
the prefect choice for the role.

"This movie has become my life. I have auditioned at least 30 actresses
for this role -- Paris came in and owned it. She is this role," Variety
quoted Bousman, as saying.

"We saw many actresses for the role, and Paris sang it better than all of
them," added Mazzocone.

Mark Burg and Oren Koules are producing the film.

Writers: Don't expect 'Simpsons' to slow

(AP)
Updated: 2007-07-29 16:34

SAN DIEGO - TV's favorite animated family, "The Simpsons," already has a
hit movie, a video game on the way, a new theme-park ride and the title
of America's longest-running sitcom. So what's next? Plenty, according to
creator Matt Groening and his team of writers, who spoke to a crowd of
more than 6,500 fans at the Comic-Con entertainment expo on Saturday 鈥
just one day after "The Simpsons Movie" opened.

Fans can expect the return of Sideshow Bob, with guest stars John Mahoney
as his father and David Hyde Pierce as his brother, said head writer Al
Jean. Sideshow Bob will also be part of the new Simpsons ride, set to
open in spring 2008 at Universal Studios in Orlando and Universal City,
Calif.

A new comic-book store will be coming to Springfield, said "Simpsons"
writer-producer Matt Selman. The shop owner will be voiced by Jack Black,
with guest stars including Art Spiegelman, author of the Pulitzer
Prize-winning "Maus"; and "recluse wizard genius" Alan Moore, the writer
behind "V For Vendetta" and "Watchmen."

"There will be more comic book references per capita than in any other
piece of comedy animation in the history of entertainment," Selman said.

Springfield will also become the unlikely site of the first presidential
primary in the nation, said writer-producer Michael Price. Jon Stewart
and "another giant 'Simpsons' nerd, Dan Rather," lend their voices to the
candidates. Springfield residents, tired of the politicking, submit a
protest vote.

"They decide to write in the most ridiculous, insane, stupid protest
candidate they can think of, which is Ralph Wiggam," Price said. "But of
course it's taken seriously and Ralph Wiggam becomes the front-runner of
the presidential nomination for both parties."

The show's 19th season begins Sept. 23. And it won't stop there, said
longtime writer-producer David Mirkin.

"We hope we'll still be producing the show when we can actually
hypodermically inject it into your head," he said. "That's how far into
the future we're planning."
