Chinese Tutor - Super waitress' 'Hot Hot Kisses' sparks my imagination

ENTERTAINMENT / Hot Pot Column

Super waitress' 'Hot Hot Kisses' sparks my imagination

By Hu Xudong (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-05-30 14:42

Upon entering a restaurant, many men like me would browse through the
waitresses before browsing through the menu. After ranking them on
appearance, we'd begin a guessing game: Would the most beautiful woman
serve our table?

It is the natural hope of such men that the Queen of Flowers - the
highest ranked beauty - would come over. As soon as a waitress on the
lower end of the scale draws near, a collective big sigh can be heard.

Such anticipation is actually a big trap: The primary mission in a
restaurant is to eat. All expectations and appreciation should focus on
the delicacies on the table, not on those walking the restaurant floor.
Taking a fancy in a good-looking waitress can be a major hindrance on the
primary mission.

After patronizing small restaurants for years, I have found that the
Queen of Flowers is usually proud of her stunning looks and laments the
shabby surroundings incompatible with her outstanding features.

A woman of such stature can fire the wild imaginations of the kitchen
staff at the back. This can lead to tension between her and the kitchen
boys and among the chefs themselves.

Whatever the situation, the customers who luckily get the attention of
the top waitress can soon find themselves in an awkward situation: Their
dishes would take forever to serve, and when they do appear, the taste is
less than satisfactory, maybe because the kitchen staff are not getting
the full attention they desire.

On the contrary, waitresses of more common appearance are much more
reliable. Some of the heroines even stand up for the interests of the
innocent customers.

Recently, my wife and I dropped into a small Sichuan restaurant. A
waitress with the good looks of Super Girl Zhang Liangyin served us, but
she soon drifted into her sentimental little corner and stayed there.

Like most small eateries, the waitresses must constantly remind the busy
chefs to hurry up the dishes. Thanks to our Super Waitress, we stayed
staring at our empty table while people who came after us were enjoying
plenty of dishes.

Suddenly, thunder erupted at the kitchen: "No dish has been served for No
11, all the later tables have got their food! What the hell are you
playing at! Get the dishes ready now!"

I looked up to find a waitress whose face reminded me of the ferocious
bronze masks unearthed at Sanxingdui. She was the busiest figure in the
restaurant and constantly barked orders to the kitchen boys.

We looked at her with gratitude, but she had no time to return the look.
Running among the tables, she returned to the window and shouted in
Sichuan dialect: "Why are the dishes for No 11 still not done? You are a
bunch of foolish children with no brains for anything. Get me the 'Hot
Hot Kisses' for No 11. Do you hear me? 'Hot Hot Kisses'!"

The so-called "Hot Hot Kisses" is a trademark dish for the restaurant:
pig snout deeply fried with green and red peppers.

Our dishes were served in no time. As we ate "Hot Hot Kisses", I couldn't
help thinking about our heroine. In my imagination, I did give her a "hot
hot kiss".

Chinese Speaking - Russia's Konstantin Lavronenko wins Cannes best actor

Russia's Konstantin Lavronenko wins Cannes best actor

Russian actor Konstantin Lavronenko (L) and Swedish actress Maria
Bonnevie pose during a photocall for Russian director Andrei
Zviaguintsev's film 'Izgnanie' (The Banishment) at the 60th edition of
the Cannes Film Festival, southern France, 18 May 2007.[AFP]

Russian actor Konstantin Lavronenko won the Cannes film festival's Best
Actor prize Sunday for his role in "The Banishment" by Andrei Zviagintsev.

In the intensely emotional movie, touching on death and remorse,
Lavronenko, 46, plays the role of a man deeply committed to the family
who, on revisiting his father's home, learns his wife is pregnant and
believes she has a lover.

Zviagintsev accepted the prize on behalf of the actor, who was unable to
catch a last-minute flight to France because the Cannes jury deliberated
until shortly before the ceremony.

"I am delighted for Konstantin, more than delighted -- he deserved this
prize," he said.

"I would like to thank the jury, the festival organisers and the public.
I am very happy."

Lavronenko, who starred in the director's previous film, "The Return,"
broke into film after building his career in the theatre.

That picture, in which Lavronenko played an absent father who re-enters
the lives of his two sons more than a decade after disappearing, won the
Golden Lion at the Venice film festival in 2003.

Lavronenko recently appeared in the British television series "Archangel"
with the latest James Bond, Daniel Craig, as well as the Polish film
"Mistrz" by Piotr Trzaskalski.

Learn Chinese - Scorsese shares film secrets at Cannes

ENTERTAINMENT / Latest News

Scorsese shares film secrets at Cannes

(AFP)
Updated: 2007-05-25 09:06

US director Martin Scorsese poses during a photocall at the Festival
Palace in Cannes, southern France, during the 60th edition of the Cannes
Film Festival, 22 May 2007.[AFP]

It's the story line in a movie that counts first and foremost,
Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese told a crowd of wannabe
film-makers at Cannes on Thursday.

"It's the subject matter I'm attracted to and it always has been,"
Scorsese told a packed auditorium at his first Cannes Film Masterclass,
attended by Quentin Tarantino and a host of other film types who fought
to get seats.

"We want to see the great man and catch something of his wisdom," budding
producer Joshua Klar told AFP.

Klar came along with Abe Lebovic, whose short movie, "Goyta" was selected
for the festival's official competition for shorts. They had to leave
early but said even some of Scorsese's fascinating insights "are better
than nothing."

They missed quite a lot.

For well over an hour, Scorese talked in length about the wide palate of
movies he directed in over 45 years in the business.

He talked with Cannes film veteran Henri Behar in front of a huge screen
on showing excerpts from key movies including "Mean Streets", "Raging
Bull", "After Hours" and "The Departed".

Speaking about why he shot boxing scenes in "Raging Bull" as if the
viewer was in the ring, Scorsese said he had not known how to film a
fight as he had never been to one.

It was only after watching a boxing match that "I could see and hear the
sound of punches," so he wanted spectators to get the same feel, he said.

Shooting scenes of violence, part of his childhood in a tough New York
neighbourhood, was easier: "I tend to do it the way I experienced seeing
or being part of it as a grew up."

Music and colour are the other elements that play key roles in his many
movies.

The well-known hit song "Baby you're the one" soars at a defining moment
in "Casino" and it was the musical score of Scorsese's film "Kundun"
about the Dalai Lama that designed the movie rather than the other way
round, the director said.

Comedy and sex are less common themes though Scorsese said he enjoyed
making comedy while realising it was difficult.

But sex, he said, was a great unknown. "I'm looking forward to shooting
sex some day. I've a few ideas."

HSK - Johnny Depp is hot enough for Keira

ENTERTAINMENT / Gossip

Johnny Depp is hot enough for Keira

(Hollywood Rag)
Updated: 2007-05-23 10:19

Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp says kissing Keira Knightley was "awkward" - because she is
so much younger than him.

The pair shared a smooch in 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest',
but Johnny, 43, found it difficult to pucker up to Keira, 22, because of
the big age gap between the two stars.

He said in an interview with New magazine: "The smooches are always so
awkward, especially because Keira and I have never been in that kind of
situation together. She's, like, three and I'm a thousand!

"We've known each other for a few years and suddenly it was, 'Are you
ready for this?' And you just do it. It becomes more like a stunt in a
way. She was a great sport about it."

Keira has previously revealed she begged director Gore Verbinski to add
the kiss between Captain Jack Sparrow and her character Elizabeth Swann.

She said: "I was saying, 'Give me one kiss, just give me one kiss'."

"I got it and it was good, really good."

Learning Mandarin - Jones tops "Pie" with strong acting debut

Jones tops "Pie" with strong acting debut

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-05-18 09:18

Cast members Jude Law and Norah Jones arrive for an evening gala
screening of Chinese director Wong Kar Wai's in-competition film 'My
Blueberry Nights' at the 60th Cannes Film Festival May 16, 2007.[Reuters]

"My Blueberry Nights" is a melancholy torch song in three-part harmony.
In Wong Kar Wai's English-language debut, the acclaimed Hong Kong-based
filmmaker brings before his always-prowling camera three stories about
addiction -- addiction to alcohol, addiction to gambling and, most of
all, addiction to love.

Nothing truly profound gets discovered, nor does this film mark a career
breakthrough for Wong despite the shift in language and locale. The
director is chasing a mood here, a mood, an atmosphere and feelings, much
as he did in "In the Mood for Love," which premiered at Cannes seven
years ago.

His camera notices how people smoke cigarettes and eat food and how
windows, door frames and space itself can confine people. In cramped Hong
Kong, this impressionistic technique served as metaphor for a way of life.

But in Manhattan and Memphis and in Nevada casinos, the confinement is
more emotional than physical. People shortchange their lives in
obsessions over people and behaviors that ill suit them.

This cool and cerebral film could be a hot art house item. But despite a
cast headed by songstress Norah Jones -- in an auspicious acting debut --
Jude Law, David Strathairn, Rachel Weisz and Natalie Portman, the film is
unlikely to move beyond the art house in North America. It may achieve
greater box-office success in Europe and certain Asian markets.

Jones plays Elizabeth, the main actor in the first segment and then a
participant/observer in the next two sections with a coda back in New
York that brings her character's emotional odyssey full circle to a
fitting though predictable conclusion.

Virtually the whole first third of the film takes place in a Manhattan
greasy spoon run by English ex-patriot Jeremy (Law). An occasional diner
customer, Elizabeth is in the throes of a really bad breakup with her
lover. Sensing a sensitive, caring soul in the guy behind the counter,
she begins to frequent the joint.

Jeremy feeds her blueberry pie, a dessert left over at closing because
"nobody wants it." You sense Jeremy is falling in love with Elizabeth,
but she is too enthralled with her grief to notice.

Elizabeth decamps for the open road and finds herself in Memphis. Two
waitressing jobs, at a diner and a bar, allow her to witness the
irreparably broken marriage of an older cop (Strathairn) and his younger
wife (Weisz). An imbalance in the loving has estranged them: He is mad
for her, but she is too young and confused. They tried to drink their way
back into love, but mornings always brought hangovers and remorse. Lizzy
-- she changes her name with each locale -- then sees the final,
desperate and very sad actions of people who can find no way out.

Another waitress job in a Nevada casino brings her into contact with
Leslie (Portman), an inveterate gambler on a losing streak. Beth (as she
now calls herself) winds up with Leslie's Jag when the gambler hocks it
to her for betting money. The two then roar into the desert, riding
around and talking until Leslie's problem emerges -- a father who taught
her everything about cards and little about life other than to trust no
one, a father who may or may not now be dying.

The curtain falls with Elizabeth back at Jeremy's diner, a changed woman
who perhaps now can experience the love that awaits her.

Working from a script he wrote with Lawrence Block, Wong and his crew
maintain a dreamlike atmosphere throughout the woman's journey. Much of
this film was made in the editing room and lab as Wong manipulates time,
space and colors to render these melancholy tales into fleeting memories
culled from a vague past. Did this really happen or was it a dream? A
character wonders.

It doesn't seem to matter much to Wong. Even the way ice cream melts into
blueberry pie in extreme close-up captures, he seems to feel, an emotion
felt, forgotten, then re-remembered.

The glue here is Jones, who holds a wispy, wistful film together with a
deeply felt, unself-conscious performance that strikes the right notes
without ever falling into repetition or banality. She brings her singer's
talent of knowing when to go for emotions and when to hold back to her
acting. It's remarkably assured work; one hopes she will further explore
acting in other movies.

Catkins a pest? Oh, give it a rest

By Raymond Zhou (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-05-11 18:41

The season of willow catkins is almost gone, and I'm starting to miss it.

For the past several weeks, those of us who live in Beijing have been
bombarded by media accusations that these flying, dancing, gyrating
cotton-ball-like clusters are the biggest nuisance of the all-too-short
spring season in the city. They exacerbate asthma and clog auto parts,
among other sins.

Being a good contrarian, I'll count the ways that willow catkins are good
for the humankind. It's not an effort at balanced reporting, it's just
another perspective.

As a starter, willow catkins are visually romantic. To save space, I
won't quote you any of the immortal poems that our ancestors wrote to
extol the unisexual apetalous flowers. But lovers walking on a sidewalk
with thousands of soft balls floating around them make for a sight to
kill for.

If I were Gene Kelly, I'd do a number called Singin' in the Catkins and
I'd kick up a whirlwind of catkins so that there will be
cross-pollination of every character in the show.

As a matter of fact, filmmakers can find a variety of applications for
such a scene. They can create a romantic gauze effect without resorting
to soft focus lens. Say you are on a tight budget and cannot afford
renting snow machines, catkins can be a passable substitute. If you want
heavy snows, you can have the extras shake the willow trees.

Catkins floating on the street can also be put to good use. They are soft
and tend to roll into bigger globs. That means, given a critical mass,
they can function as a life-saving cushion for anyone jumping off tall
buildings. Before the police arrive to rescue the migrant worker who
threatens to plunge to the pavement to get his pay back, we can use
brooms to gather enough catkins to create a pad of protection. And we'll
call up the local television station and say: "Mr. DeMille of the DV
generation, we are ready for close-up!"

They can be props for scientific experiments, too. When winds whip up a
column of catkins, it is basically a tornado at play, albeit with much
reduced force. We should take school children out on the street and have
them observe the phenomenon. I bet it'll elicit more wows than showing
the movie Twister. Call it Meteorology 101, the field trip.

Speaking of science, catkins take a lot of explaining - why they are
single sex and yet carry pollens from one sex to another. If that's too
boring, we can dissect the sociological ramifications. The unisexual
nature of catkins has blossomed into a vibrant human craze. Turn on the
TV for any contest show, and you'll see the single-sex look of today's
young.

Scientists have suggested removing catkins by injecting something into
the willows and changing their sex. Such tampering has obviously
pollinated the human species. For those contestants who dazzle with their
androgynous appeal, I propose they don a catkin costume and do a catkin
dance. If they can be as graceful, they'll have my vote.

First "dating street"

Updated: 2007-05-02 10:24

According to a report by Wuhan Morning Post, Wuhan has set up the first
dating street in China.

The dating street will be open to the general public on May 1, but its
signs were put up on April 28. Many people have already come to the
street to satisfy their curiosity.

The service of the shops on the street will be free of charge, when the
information of candidates will be put on bulletin boards along the street
(300 candidates at a time). One who is interested can fill a card printed
with the name of the person of one's choice, and wait and see if luck
will be with him/her.

Currently 150 people have handed in their applications, most being in
their 30s, including college teachers, scientists and public servants.
Interestingly, there are more women candidates than men.

Wuhan is planning to set up another 4 to 9 dating streets like this one
in the next 12 months.

auspicious "golden pig year", which comes once 60 years. For many couples
it's the best time to have a child, which means there could be a baby

with high-quality baby goods for those little angels.

Beijing

as stocked as Xin Zhong Guo, yet it is very popular among young couples
as it sells some stylish goods for kids. Moreover, if you spend more than
100 yuan, you can become a member and enjoy such shopping privileges as a

Worshipping my goddess of bargaining

By Wan Weiwang (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-04-18 18:03

My wife is known as a good bargainer. I am her loyal disciple. One Sunday
morning, she asked me to get vegetables while she stayed in bed. I
noticed a stall selling cotton-padded shoes. I picked up a pair, asking
casually: "How much?"

"12 yuan ($1.60)," a deep voice replied.

I was quite satisfied. Reaching into the pocket, I said dryly: "I'll take
them at 8."

"12!" said the deep voice.

I smiled. The vegetable dealers all know me too well to bargain. It's
hard to find a stranger to exercise my tongue. I narrowed my eyes and
peeked at the young man.

"Such hand-made"

"Such hand-made shoes have good quality with fine materials and tight
stitches. To be honest, 12 is too low. I've sold many at 16."

"You are selling them at"

"I am selling them at a low price with a reason. Sir, you don't look
penny-pinching and you won't care about bargaining. I'll feel guilty if I
ask a high price. An honest business can last forever, right?"

"No bargaining "

"No bargaining is possible. Sir, you are frank, so am I. Count me as a
friend, 11."

I gasped, securitizing the guy in his 20s. His eyes shone shrewdly and I
knew I had to teach him a lesson.

"You are wrong if you treasure them! They are nothing but low quality:
light in the left and heavy in the right, loose at the top and tight at
the bottom. They are no Nike or Adidas and won't cost more than 8. Since
you work hard on the street, I don't bargain. If you insist, your
business won't last. 8.5! Take it or I'll go!"

The man's eyes shone brighter: "I can't sell such good shoes at 8.5."

I turned away. Walking away is a profound art. It tests the psychology of
both seller and buyer. The one who gives in will lose. But leaving is
also a double-edged sword and should be reserved for extreme situations.

One, two, three steps. I didn't look back. A casual voice called: "You
say this pair is bad, how about some others?"

He was good. That question invited me back without showing his eagerness.
I examined other pairs, sneering at the low-quality. The man chuckled,
but then stopped: "Lady, may I help you?"

It was my better half. She certainly had a good sleep: "Spending two
hours on vegetables! Are you buying them from outer space?"

I confessed about the shoes. Yawning, she took the pair and glanced:
"Wholesale from Wenzhou? Wholesale price 6, retail at 7.5. Since you
carried them here, I'll take them at 8."

The man's face turned ashy. He gave me the shoes: "Brother, you are a
rare bargainer. But this woman has cut Achilles' heel and wastes not one
word!"

My wife waved at the gathering crowd and snapped her fingers at me: "Go!"
I took the shoes and ran along.

The sun shone brightly. A ray of light glared on my beloved. In a moment,
I thought I saw, well, the Goddess of Bargaining.

Connery still considering "Indiana Jones 4" role

(AFP)
Updated: 2007-04-07 09:19

LOS ANGELES - Producers of the next "Indiana Jones" movie are waiting to
hear if former 007 star Sean Connery will return as the main hero's
father, the trade magazine Variety reported Friday.

Directors George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, set to begin work on the
fourth installment of the film franchise in June along with star Harrison
Ford, are trying to coax Connery, 76, out of retirement for the film,
Variety said.

Connery, who has been in no films since 2003, said he'd consider
returning if he liked the script, the magazine reported.

Ford, 64, returns as the daring archaeologist. The movie co-stars Shia
LaBeouf, 20, and Cate Blanchett, 37, likely as Indy's son and love
interest respectively.

Producers have kept the plot and even title of "Indiana Jones 4" a tight
secret, but Paramount Pictures plans to release the film in May 2008,
Variety said.

Pig race for an abundant year

(chinanews.cn)
Updated: 2007-03-28 11:28

A great local traditional festival, the pig race, is held in Shantou,
Guangdong Province once for 12 years, to express people's well wishes for
achieving an abundant year. In the rural areas of Shantou, the event is a
grand ceremony.

The festival is usually held in the front of the ancestral temple with
nearly 100 pigs participating in the race. The whole village is enveloped
in happy atmosphere, as many local people living abroad also come back to
take part in the event.

Villagers are expected to dress up their pigs, in their wish for a bumper
harvest in the year. "We hold the race also in order to know which family
can raise best pigs," said one villager.

It is reported that in this year of the pig weighed about at least
200-300 kilos, and the heaviest one was more than 300 kilos.

Every yearafter the race, villagers will slaughter these pigs and eat the
pork together with their friends.

Pnyin - Reese Witherspoon's single makeover

Reese Witherspoon's single makeover

(femalefirst.co.uk)
Updated: 2007-03-16 11:38

Reese Witherspoon has had fashion makeover following her split from Ryan
Phillippe.

The Oscar-winning mother-of-two, who filed for divorce in October, has
followed the advice of Nina Ricci designer Olivier Theyskens and cleaned
out her closet.

Reese told Harper's Bazaar magazine: "I've used a stylist before, but
these days I'm kind of just going with Olivier's taste.

"At the Golden Globes this year I felt like I looked different than I've
ever looked."

The actress has also purged her wardrobe of unwanted fashion items -
admitting she often gets too immersed in her film characters, and that is
reflected in her style.

The 30-year-old 'Walk the Line' star confessed: "I recently put a big
pile of clothes on the floor of my closet, and I looked at a lot of the
stuff and thought, 'That's not me at all. What was I thinking?'

"For 'Legally Blonde' I went through a pink phase like you wouldn't
believe.

Chinese School - 'Prison Break' actor charged in crash

'Prison Break' actor charged in crash

(AP)
Updated: 2007-03-09 08:38

Actor Lane Garrison, front, arrives at the Beverly Hills courthouse
Thursday, March. 8, 2007, in the Beverly Hills, Calif. [AP]

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - "Prison Break" actor Lane Garrison was charged
Thursday with manslaughter and drunken driving for a crash that killed a
17-year-old boy in his car last year.

The 26-year-old performer was accused of felony vehicular manslaughter
while intoxicated, felony driving under the influence causing injury to
multiple victims and felony driving with a blood-alcohol level above the
.08 percent legal limit causing injury. He also was charged with a
misdemeanor count of furnishing alcohol to a minor.

He faces up to six years and eight months in prison if convicted.

Garrison was freed on $100,00 bail after he appeared in Beverly Hills
Superior Court, where his arraignment was postponed until April 11.

The judge barred Garrison from driving, drinking alcohol or going to
bars. He also was barred from contacting witnesses or victims of the
crash.

His attorney, Harland Braun, said Garrison "has a deep sense of
responsibility" and indicated a plea bargain was in the works.

Garrison is "going to accept responsibility for his conduct. The only
question is what is that level of responsibility," he said.

Garrison, a Dallas native, was behind the wheel of a 2001 Land Rover that
jumped a curb and struck a tree on Dec. 2.

The crash killed Beverly Hills High School student Vahaghn Setian, 17,
and injured two 15-year-old girls who also were in the car.

Garrison is accused of supplying Setian with vodka, said Jane Robison, a
spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

Police said Garrison was found to have a blood-alcohol level of .20
percent and cocaine in his system.

The charges only indicate that his blood-alcohol level was above .15
percent.

Braun previously has said that Garrison met the three youths at a grocery
store and accompanied them to a party, where he had one drink.

In a statement, members of Setian's family said they were "gratified" by
the charges.

"They have lost their only child due to Lane Garrison's recklessness,"
said the statement issued by family attorney Paul R. Kiesel.

Garrison played David "Tweener" Apolskis in Fox's "Prison Break." His
character was killed in an episode last year.
