skylee -

I guess the tariffs do not refer to tariffs charged by the government. Does the sentence mean that
the prices (of hotel rooms etc) change according to the period of a year and the periods are
specified by the establishment (eg the hotel)? If it does, consider -

價格如上(下)述隨日期而變動。

Ranmamezzo -

Thanks for your reply!

Yeah.. it refers to hotel rooms' tariffs.
While booking the room from a reservation form, the prices change according to the selected date
(e.g. from Sept till March and from April till August there are different retes).

Another post to entertain my *obsession* for differences in meanings between characters... Can
anyone tell me what the differences are (no matter how subtle) between 冊, 書 and 籍?

I am aware that in modern Chinese, they all mean "book". However, were there any distinctions
between them, say, for Classical Chinese? For instance, 書 connotes the meaning closer to a
"letter" or "document" (e.g. 證書), and 冊 suggests the idea of a physical book as we know it,
i.e. with a cover and binding (e.g. 手冊). What about 籍?

(I think this is probably an easier question to answer than my previous thread regarding the
differences between 選, 擇 and 揀. )

And you may want to double check the modern definition again... They are different.

籍 is also record
册 means a volume (a bit different than a book)

In terms of ancient usage you may wish to notice the fact that 籍 has a 竹子头 and that may
help you think of the what it refers too...

Lu -

書 book, plain and simple. Also sometimes document
冊 volume. I've seen this used most for the 'paperback' sewn volumes of a traditional Chinese
book, that get stacked together in a box. But that might be because I worked in a library
籍 paperwork, records, documentation

I hope this helps!

Ok long and short of it is I want to learn some 成都话 but do to the fact I don't live in
Chengdu this is a bit difficult. And before anyone really asks Mianyang and Chengdu do have enough
differences so that people in Chengdu make fun of the way Mianyang people speak 四川话.

I can learn a little bit from one of my friends but I fear it's not going to be enough and would
like to make some progress on my on. I already know some very basic stuff and being in Mianyang
helps a little bit with the feel of the language but I was hoping someone knew of resources
(online or not) that would help. And obviously ones that have audio would be preferred.

Another idea I am having is finding someone on skype or something like that but I don't like that
idea. All in all I want my one friend to teach me as even she has her own way of talking that is
different than many other 成都人 but I think I need to start having a little bit and learning
more before she will be willing to put in the effort (basically needs to see that I am not only
willing but am working on it)... Any thoughts would be great!

You can get fairly academic books about this kind of thing, but I've only ever seen self-study
materials for Shanghaihua and Cantonese. There's some stuff here, but I haven't looked in detail
so don't be surprised if it's useless.

You might get some pointers from this, but use with caution.

Edit: this looks like it might be the most useful.

I study in Chengdu. I think people living here have no difficult understanding mianyang people's
accent because some of my classmates come from mianyang.

have you every heared 《猫和老鼠 川话版》(the cartoon "Tom and Jerry")?
I think it's a good source and funny...
i recommand you get the cartoon..
by the way, I think i can give you some help in learning 成都话...

muyongshi -

Oh yeah...I have heard of it and can't believe I didn't think of it before...

I'm not concerned about the understandability of the two as I know a mianyang person can be
understood but I would rather learn the chengdu variety (for previous stated reasons).

roddy -

猫和老鼠 川话版. Couldn't resist going looking for that . . .

muyongshi -

I've watched it before...never thought of it as a study tool though....thanks for the link

YETIboy1230 -

One of my classmates[from mianyang] said there wasn't noticeable difference in MianYangHua and
ChengDuDua[To me, indeed as he spoke to me in MianYanHua]. Instead, ChongQingHua[my mother tongue]
and ChenDuHua ,a huge difference to me. Well, even that 'huge' difference doesn't make any sense
to those who are living outside SiChuan or ChongQing.
With the fact that ALL of my friends from other language regions never think there is the
difference between CQ Hua and SC Hua, I think, you'd better give a second thought on
differenciating ChenDuHua and MianYangHua.
By the way, If you can notice there is a slight[To me 'Huge', as I can tell where one is from just
by one's accent] difference between CQhua and CDhua, your Chinese must be so awesome that you are
likely better than most Chinese who speak dialects mainly.

muyongshi -

Well samson I appreciate your offer and maybe you could start by posting some basic things on here
in regards to difference of sentence structure a few of the more common words (ie 晓得,啥子
and add a brief explanation of the pronunciation for everyones benefit- thankfully this part will
be easier for me as I hear these words every day and already know the pronunciation). And
hopefully everyone can benefit from this as well.....

Yetiboy...I know what you mean about Chongqing vs. Chengdu. The part I find the funniest is how
angry some chongqingers will get if you mention to them that they speak 四川话. They are so
adiment that it is not 四川话 it is 重庆话 even though it really is more of an accent issue
(with a few other minor differences). I know the difference between chengdu and mianyang are not
huge as you so put it but I will restate that I prefer the chengdu variety as my main reason for
learning to "speak" it and not just understand would be for a person that is from Chengdu and well
they get a kick out of the way mianyang people say 面包...

It wasn't that useful just really, really, REALLY entertaining. And the funniest part is is that

sichuanhua. here are my emotions towards this phenomenon

That is so sick! I never liked the guy because the only benefit of yelling is getting out of your
comfort zone but does not help with anything else. I always thought something was wrong with him
and it never sat right with me. Always told my friends that their are better places but now, he
got on my bad side and I'll be damned if I see my friends bowing before this guy.

zhwj -

Li Yang's explanation:

(1) the students weren't kneeling to him, but rather to their own teachers, who were at the
opposite end of the venue (diagrams here). That seems reasonable enough.

(2) it was spontaneous on the part of the students. Less convincing, if only because I'd guess no
one wants to be the one person standing up when 3000 other people go down on their knees.

There's too much nationalism and notions of sacrifice wrapped up in Crazy English for my taste.
Sure, it's difficult to learn a foreign language, but I don't see any reason to drive people to
tears over the impossibility of the task, the sacredness of the mission, or the selflessness of
one's parents.

muyongshi -

I'm sorry that is not reasonable at all.

Okay bowing 鞠躬 is one thing. A sign of respect and most people would find that acceptable,
basically prostrating themselves is just wrong! It shows servitude not gratefulness. Spontaneous
or not it shows there is something wrong deeper in the environment they have created for studying.
I do think that there were many that just followed suit but it still shows that they have created
a cult like environment. Also, it's not just us that are finding this disturbing it is many
Chinese people as well so it goes far beyond the culture of respect.

muyongshi -

Here is another place that lists many responses, reactions, and explanations of the events.

roddy -

Can't believe that guy is still going. I remember back [wishy-washy effect over screen which
resolves into a black-and-white scene in late 1990's china] back in 1998 you'd run into Chinese
people who would start their Crazy English spiel with an introduction and then segue seamlessly
into a joke or two and never let you get a word in edgewise - and if you ever did manage to ask a
simple question or two they were flummoxed, as you were inevitably deviating from the rote-learned
crazy English script.

Lu's post made me think of 丫 (ya1) which means forked or bifurcation, because it is possibly the
easiest Chinese character to remember. Not only does it look like a fork in the road, the pinyin
is ya1 and the character itself also looks like a big letter Y.

I first encountered it in the word 丫头 ya1tou2 which means servant girl - somewhat less
intuitive. Maybe old time servant girls had to wear pigtails or something?

飆 appears to be the more modern form of the word; in this, the 猋 can also be placed on the

Marrying foreigners is not the only option. Another one is to simply avoid marrying altogether.
There are a few chinese men who are reformed, but not many. Chinese men should be certified and
also monitored carefully. If they do something bad, they should be made into a quadipleagic, they
won't be much of a threat to anyone if they can't move their arms or legs.

I personally prefer castration as a way to treat ill mannered men and then if that only serves to
make them angrier then we could "break" them as the gangsters used to say.

I have always thought that Chinese woman have the power to reform all the men in their society and
get the pick of the crop due to the gender gap. All the girls have to do is not be willing to ever
be with anyone who smokes, drinks (as in getting drunk like Chinese people so enjoy doing), and
any other attributes they choose. Those boys would be whipped into shape right fast.

jonaspony -

Yeah, i'm with you guys. People say violence isn't the answer, but I say they aren't asking the
right questions.

We can't be expected to sit back and mind our own business. We won the cold war for Chrissakes.
It's time to shoulder the 'white man's burden' again. But don't expect any thanks from the
Chinese. Oh no... See how they try to make us look bad for the Opium Wars - the greatest period of
globalistion ever!

Yes Muyongshi, eugenics is worth thinking about, although it has been a little unpopular since
that whole German misunderstanding, mid last century. They settled for Outcast's solution in the
end. And they might have succeeded too, if they had folks with his energy on the team.

I hate to end on a sappy soft note. However, if there is no other alternative but to turn to
peaceful means, and let's pray it doesn't come to this.... Maybe if we loosen the laws on
intellectual property rights Chinese men won't be so scared to copy the superior moral technology
of the West.

I think it should buy him a few chinese speakers votes and maybe even a few non chinese votes who
simply respect the fact he can speak chinese. On the other hand there are also quite a few red
necks in australia who may decide not to vote for him for this reason. might claim he's too pro
chinese and their sick of made in china products or something else that they have no knowledge on
what so ever.
but then again i heard the daily telegraph didnt say anything nasty about him when reporting his
chinese lunch speech and red necks usually need to be told what to think so they will probably be
happy too

good luck to him anyway. rudds got my vote (not just for his chinese speaking abilities!)

The video link from smh.com.au is an excerpt. SBS radio (a semi-publically-funded multi-lingual
broadcasting service in Australia) played the whole lot as part of their news bulletin, if you'd
like to hear it, here it is:

http://www20.sbs.com.au/podcasting/i...edid=1&id=7155

Skip to about the 6-minute mark.

I was going to vote for Rudd's party anyway, but I thought this was pretty cool

zozzen -

Hey, where can i watch the full clip of his speech? It's amazing and ..... exotic to see him to
speak Chinese so fluently. If he becomes a PM, that'll definitely make him famous even in China.

yonglin -

To be honest, I think that you're all being unusually nice. This is kind of the first time you've
abstained from running to pick down on every tonal mistake. He is understandable, but his speech
has got a lot of the
foreigner-you-have-to-make-an-effort-to-understand-because-he-gets-the-tones-wrong feeling to it.
I think that having obtained a degree in Chinese and having worked as a diplomat in China for such
a long time, you would expect someone to speak Chinese a bit better than that.

That said, he does speak Chinese a lot better than most Swedish politicians speak English, but
that's probably because most Swedish politicians didn't even graduate from high school...

danielk -

zozzen, I don't know of anywhere you can see a full video of his speech. The link I posted earlier
contains a full audio recording of the Chinese parts, though.

The two videos I'm aware of are:

对牛弹琴

I'll have a go with this one.

I have a list of names in simplified characters, and one character amongst them consists of 言 on
the left-hand side, and 咸 on the right hand side. Since the 言 in most simplified characters is
simplified to 讠, I'm not sure whether this character is a real simplified character, or the
person who compiled the list just used a traditional character instead.

In any case, I have searched several dictionaries, both simplified and traditional, but I cannot
find this character. I am surprised, therefore, that it has been printed into the list, since that
would mean it exists in some font set.

So, does anyone know what this character is? What is its simplified version like - is it 言咸 or
讠咸? And how should this character be pronounced?

Thanks.

Quote:

This character might be a "proper noun" (a family name maybe?)?

No, it is not a family name. It was part of the 名 as opposed to 姓.

zhwj -

諴 doesn't seem to have a simplified form in standard Unicode. Handwriting it, I'd guess you'd
just simplify the radical.

889 -

Here's what Wenlin says:

"諴 [shén] [xián] [gān] [yán] (Unihan) in harmony; in agreement; incere [sic]"

It's 8af4 in Unicode and in Cantonese is pronounced haahm\.

And here's another listing which shows xián as the proper reading:

http://www.zdic.net/zd/zi/ZdicE8ZdicABZdicB4.htm

Like Poster 5, I haven't come across a jiantizi version, though.

aeon -

Are you sure it isn't 诚 (cheng2 - honest) and you've misread it?

Jekai -

I think aeon is right about it being 诚, especially since it's one of the characters in my own
Chinese name; 戴诚

The character 諴 at normal text size actually looks so much like the simplified 诚 that at first
glance, I was sure it was the same character.

zhwj -

People sometimes like to choose obscure characters for names, so finding someone with the
character 諴 in their name would not be surprising, really. It might sound better than 诚 in
that particular name, and it carries an additional meaning of 和谐 - what's not to like?

Also, the original poster said that the list was written in simplified characters - 誠 would have
been 诚, but there's no alternative for 諴.

anonymoose -

Thanks for your help everyone!

It's definitely 諴.

I don't want to keep paying for expensive bottled water and I hate the taste of boiled faucet
water - what are some good brands of drink mixes that I can buy to make my water taste like maybe
lemonade or ice tea or anything else?

Would appreciate chinese characters(for brand names), pin yin, wikipedia links, etc

Thank you!

Eden7 -

you may try Juice powder... Tang 果珍 "Tang" brand...lemon flavor.it can be mixed with cold
water.

yonglin -

I suspect that this is why Chinese people drink tea.

Xiao Kui -

Quote:

Expensive???? What are you drinking - Perrier?

I pay $10 US for 55 gallons, which last me and my 2 roommates 3-4 months

optical -

How can you get 55 gallons for 10 dollars? I am buying the big 4L jug for 4.50, that's the best
deal I've found so far. I'll have to look for tang... I liked that in america.

optical -

I just got back from Auchan (the psychotically over crowed "super market" full of pushing
screaming pyschos, aka. a fun place to be) and I found Tang! So thank you so much for suggesting
that eden7 I am really happy now, I just made some of it and it tastes great with the boiled city
water - I even found some Nestea powder!

And also they had those same 4L jugs of water for 2.90 - Damn campus store markup charging me
4.50....

imron -

Water from supermarkets is expensive. You should be able to get a big 19L bottle of water
delivered to where ever you live for between 5-10kuai. This thread has more information about
buying water.

That being the case, I also second Yonglin's suggestion of drinking tea Bear in mind though that
there are good teas and bad teas. Cheap tea similar to what you get for free in restaurants can be
had for almost nothing, but it tastes like rubbish so you're still back at your original problem.
Good tea will probably start around 200RMB for 500g. That might seem a bit pricey, but just keep
in mind that 500g is actually a lot of tea. A reasonably sized container of good tea will set you
back about 40-50 RMB and depending on how much you drink, it should last several weeks. You
probably don't want to buy more than that at a single time, because it will start to lose its
freshness.

Depending on your tastes, you might like to try starting out with something like 铁观音
Tieguanyin or 龙井 Longjing tea. The former is a sweeter tea, and the latter is more bitter.

cdn_in_bj -

How about 酸梅汤? You can buy the drink mix powder at any grocery store.

Pravit -

I LUV 酸梅汤, also thirding the tea suggestion. Support your local tea leaves dealer!

An encrypted (https) proxy will do the trick (edit: Damn you Adrian, you copied my idea and posted
it first so nobody could tell). I don't know if there are any free ones, but the paid one I use,
proxify.com (use this link if you decide to sign up, lines my pockets) allows it.

When that happens on Firefox I get a 'connection to the server was lost' message. I can't remember
exactly how it works, but I think there was a technical discussion linked to on here sometime.
Basically the firewall does something like send the server a message saying 'hey, stop sending
this, we don't need it' and to your computer saying 'sorry, server says no.'.

You'll also be prevented from connecting to that server from that IP address for five or ten
minutes.
